Introduction to Screening and Brief Intervention for Problem Drinking

About the Program

Workplaces are underutilized for the delivery of alcohol prevention and early intervention programs.  Yet, they offer the opportunity to reach people in a place where they spend most of their day.  Workplace resources, including employee assistance, health promotion, and occupational heath programs, are ideal settings to identify and intervene when drinking behavior becomes risky.

This webinar is designed specifically for helping professionals and will provide an introduction to promising, feasible approaches to implementing evidence-based alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) methods in work-related settings.  The presenter will outline how to ask clients about their drinking habits using validated screening tools, enhance internal motivation to change their behavior using motivational strategies if identified to be at risk, and the evidence to support use of SBI in workplace settings.

This webinar is one component of The BIG Initiative and a joint production of the Employee Assistance Professional Association (EAPA), Employee Assistance Society of North America (EASNA), NAADAC, The Association for Addiction Professionals, American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) and the Center for Clinical Social Work to adapt alcohol screening and brief intervention protocols originally developed by the World Health Organization for workplace program including use in employee assistance programs.  This webinar will present highlights from a larger training curriculum.

Learning Objectives:

  • utilize an evidence-based screening tool to identify risky alcohol use;
  • associate level of alcohol use risk to appropriate level of brief intervention;
