Prescription Medications: The New Drug Threat

At the end of the presentation the audience will be able to discuss the prescription drugs most often abused; their connection to emergency room visits and suicide attempts; the effect on the Medicaid population and what can be done to begin addressing the problem across the country.

About the Presenter

Ron Morton has been working in the area of substance abuse and mental health since 1984.  Mr. Morton worked for the San Diego American Indian Health Center for 10 years and was the President of the National Council of Urban Indian Health. During that time Ron advocated across the country and in Washington D.C. for increased funding for urban Indian Health programs.  Mr. Morton developed the first Substance Abuse Treatment Program for Native Americans in the urban Center of San Diego as well as the first Native American Mental Health Needs assessment in San Diego County.


Mr. Morton earned 2 Masters Degrees in Clinical Psychology and achieved candidacy for a Ph.D. at California School of Professional Psychology.  Ron completed all but his dissertation before having to move to Knoxville TN to help care for his mother in law who has Alzheimer’s disease.
Ron is currently the Director of Recovery and Resiliency for Tennessee for ValueOptions.


Mr. Morton has been an advocate for many causes of the years and is now an advocate for the mentally ill in Tennessee and throughout the country.  Ron is currently a member of the board of directors for the national board for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.


Ron was the Director of Recovery Services for Peninsula, a division of Parkwest Medical Center for 5 years.  During that time Ron developed Recovery Programs that are now considered model programs by many in the state of Tennessee.  The programs that Mr. Morton created have won 2 awards of excellence from the Tennessee Association of Mental Health Organizations.
